Tourists make mistakes, we eat at the tourist restaurants, we wait too long to buy our flight tickets, we mess up sometimes.

Hey there, travelers! Today we’re in Amsterdam, talking about common mistakes tourists make when visiting this amazing city. I’m joined by my good friend Dutchify, who has tons of great videos about Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and destinations around the world.

He’s also an excellent dancer and does all sorts of cool stuff. He’s here to help us discuss some mistakes you might make as a tourist, so you can enjoy your trip to Amsterdam as much as possible.

The first mistake we often see is that people come to Amsterdam for a good time and a party, often because they know drugs are legal here. One common error is confusing a “coffee shop,” where you can buy drugs, with a regular café where you can get coffee.

Always remember that “coffee shops” sell drugs, and you’ll find them mostly in the Red Light District. Avoid buying drugs on the street as it’s risky; always go to a legitimate coffee shop where the staff can help you pick something appropriate.

Remember, the products here are much stronger than what you might be used to, so don’t overdo it.

Another mistake is thinking that the Red Light District is all there is to Amsterdam. It’s actually a small part of the city, and there are so many other wonderful areas to explore. For example, Amsterdam North is a beautiful part of the city that you can reach by a free ferry.

There’s also the Museum District with major museums, and other neighborhoods with unique architecture and attractions. Venture outside the Red Light District and you’ll find much more to see and do.

A common error tourists make is assuming they need to stay in Amsterdam. In fact, public transportation is excellent, and staying in nearby cities like Utrecht or Haarlem can save you money on accommodation.

Each of these places offers its own charm and can give you a different perspective on the Netherlands. Plus, the country is small, so it’s easy to travel between cities.

Another mistake is not booking tickets in advance for popular attractions like the Anne Frank House. You could end up waiting in line for hours and still not get in. So, always book your tickets ahead of time.

When it comes to food, don’t waste your time searching for Dutch restaurants. Amsterdam is an international city with cuisine from all over the world.

Instead, enjoy the variety of international food available. However, do try Dutch street food like poffertjes (mini pancakes) and herring. These are delicious and give you a taste of local flavors.

Avoid taking taxis or Ubers within the city. Amsterdam is small, and it’s much better to walk, bike, or use public transportation.

If you do rent a bike, make sure you know the basic rules: stay to the side, ride in the correct direction, and be cautious around tram tracks.

One last thing: in the Red Light District, never take photos of the workers. It’s disrespectful and can get you in trouble.

Always be respectful and remember that these are people doing their jobs.

If you have any other tips or mistakes to avoid, share them in the comments below.
